The story of the Wisconsin Badgers football team goes back to the early 1800s when some lead miners had to live in tunnels in the hillsides that they burrowed themselves. It was said that the lived like badgers, and that's how the name came about. The mascot was officially adopted in 1889, and the name of the mascot, Bucky Badger, came about in 1949. The team logo was first designed in 1940, but it was redesigned in 2003. The Badgers football has been just fierce and strong as a badger ever since they took the field.
One of the greatest thing about the Wisconsin Badgers football team actually doesn't have much to do with the team itself. It has a lot to do with the fans. Camp Randall Stadium was built in 1917, and it seats over 80,000 people. The student section at the stadium is very famous as the fans for the Badgers are considered to be some of the best and loyal fans around.
The first game the Wisconsin Badgers football team ever played took place in 1889, and they lost that game. They only played two games that year, and they lost both of them. However, the very next year the Badgers would turn the tide as they would crush UW-Whitewater 106-0! The Badgers would go on to win or share the conference title many times over the next decade. Then, in 1952, the Badgers were finally ranked the number one football team in the country! However, rain clouds started forming over the football team as it would go from a big success to an average team in the late 1960s. Things would stay that way until the 1990s when Barry Alvarez turned the Badgers into a team to be reckoned with once again. Alvarez would take the Badgers to eleven bowl games, winning eight, and he also won two Rose Bowls with the Badgers as well.
The Wisconsin Badgers don't have any rivals in the state of Wisconsin, because they are the only Division I school in the state. However, their biggest rival is the University of Minnesota. These two teams first played in 1890 with the Golden Gophers beating the Badgers by a score of 63-0. Since then the two teams have played well 117 games, which is the most games between two teams in Division-I history.
