In 1894, the University of Arkansas formed its first football team named the Cardinals. Along with using the bird as the mascot, the team also used red and white as the team's colors. After the 1909 football season, when the team had an undefeated record, Head Coach Hugo Bezdek referred to his football players as "a wild band of Razorbacks", a new team name was born. While the team colors remained the same, the University of Arkansas football team is now better known as the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The Razorbacks have an all-time record of 659-447-40, which makes them ranked #23 on the college football's all-time list of winning teams. The team has been part of the Southeastern Conference division since 1991 after being moved there by former head coach, Frank Boyles; prior to that, the Razorbacks had been Southwest Conference members back in 1915. The team also plays in two home stadiums: the Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, which is their primary home and the War Memorial Stadium, where they host at least 2 home games.
Like other sports' traditions, there are rivalries among the Razorbacks and other football teams. One of the team's oldest rivalry is Texas A&M Aggies that dates back to 1903. But it is the University of Mississippi team, better known as Ole Miss Rebels, that the Razorbacks have played against than any other team in the SEC. Other noted Razorback rivals include the Louisiana State University Tigers and the University of Texas Longhorns.
During the 2009 football season, the Arkansas Razorbacks had an overall season finish of 8-5 under second year head coach Bobby Petrino; they also participated and won the Liberty Bowl against the East Carolina Pirates. With this upcoming college football season, the Hogs are showing a lot of promise and there are talks about them being a top contender to win the Southeastern Conference title. But come early September when they play their first home game against Tennessee Tech to kick off the season, the fans will be lining up in droves and hope to see their beloved Hogs take center stage in the world of college football.
