In 1926 the University of Miami, or UM, had a freshman football team. This team later became known as the Miami Hurricanes. Howard Buck was the coach back then, and he lead the team to an 8-0 victory. They soon because known as "The Hurricanes". This team has had a bit of controvesy in its past, including throwing a man into the lake one day, but they are exciting to watch and a fan favorite!
They have seven people, a mix of players and coaches, that have ended up in the College Football Hall of Fame. The coaches were Jack Harding and Andy Gustafson, and the players were Ted Hendricks, Don Bosseler, Don James, Bennie Blades, and Gino Torretta. Their colors are orange, white, and black, and in 2009 their uniform was redesigned using a material that was cooler and lighter. When it comes to making a big entrance onto the field, this team is known for their smoke. That's right, once you have seen this team through a huge cloud of white smoke pouring from its entrance tunnel you will never forget it. They also play a loud tape of a hurricane sounds blasting over the sound system, which many high school teams now copy as their entrance.
This team is one of the greatest college football teams. It currently holds the record for the longest home winning streak in the history of the NCAA, winning an amazing fifty eighth game straight at the Orange Bowl! The record started back in October of 1985 and continued through September 1994! Two of the teams members have won the Heisman Trophy, Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992.
Miami has two main rivalry teams, and both come from the same state. These teams are Florida and Florida State. A secondary rivalry is Notre Dame, but it is all fun and games. Fans from all across the united states can not wait to see what will be up next for their favoriite team. Their is no limit to how far they can go! You can also watch a film called "The U" if you are a die hard Hurricane fan!
