The Clemson Tigers Football team has a long historic and unique history. Beginning in 1896, Walter Merritt Riggs organized and coached the Tigers it in its inaugural year to a 2 -1 record. Riggs who just accepted a professorship with Clemson, leaving a school later to known as Auburn University, not only brought over the game of football. He also brought his previous school’s colors and the Tiger mascot.  Riggs went on to become President of the College (1910 -1924).

From 1900 to1903, the Tigers were coached by John W Heisman, who the Heisman Trophy is named after.  He compiled the best winning percentage of .833 of any Clemson coach , with a 19-3-2 record.  Since 1900, the Clemson Tigers have won 18 Conference Titles.  They have appeared in 32 bowl games, winning 16 of the them.  Their last two bowl games were the Music City Bowl on December 29, 2009 with a victory over Kentucky 21-13 and the Gator Bowl  on January , 9, 2009 a lost to Nebraska 26-21.

1981 was the ultimate season for the Tigers.  They went undefeated with a record of 12-0.  January 1, 1982, they defeated Nebraska 22-15 at the Orange Bowl and crowned 1981 National Champions under Coach Danny Ford.   Currently, Clemson is part of the NCAA Division 1 Football and since 1953 have belonged to the Atlantic Coast Conference. They play their home games at Memorial Stadium that seats over 80,000 fans.

In December 2008, the Clemson Tigers named Dabo Swinney has their head coach.  Since taking the reigns, the Tigers record is 13-8.  He led them to their first Atlantic Conference Championship berth in over 18 years when they defeated Virginia on November 21, 2009.  The South Carolina - Clemson rivalry is one of premier ones in college football.  It is the third longest uniterrupted  series and  dates back to the early days of Clemson football.  Only 132 miles seperate the two schools and the first game dates back to 1896.  Clemson holds the advantage with 65-38-4 record.  On November 28, 2009 South Carolina upset the Clemson Tigers, who was ranked #15 at the time 34-17.  Other Clemson rivals include Georgia Tech, Boston College and Florida State.
