The Pittsburgh Panthers are the football team of the University of Pittsburgh. They are referred to by many as, "Pitt." The Panthers have always been a part of NCAA Division 1 football, even since their first game in 1890. Because of this, they have a rich history and many loyal fans. Currently they are coached by a former player on the team, Dave Wannstedt. What's special about them is that they play their home games at Heinz Field, which is where the professional Pittsburgh Steelers play. They officially took on the name of the fearsome cat in 1909, after the mountain lions that formerly lived in the Pennsylvania area.
As for the team's rich history, they have won 13 Eastern and Conference Championships, spreading from their very first in 1925 to the last current one in 2004. The famous coach, Jock Sutherland, was responsible for leading them through 8 of the 13 victories. As for bowl games, the Pitt Panthers are no strangers there. They have been to a total of 26 since their first Rose Bowl in 1927, and although they have only won 11 of those 26, they won their most recent Meineke Car Care Bowl in 2009 to break a three year streak of losing.
2010 is expected to be a great year for the Panthers. Their senior, Jason Pinkston, an offensive tackles, was honored by being named to the Outland Trophy watch list. The defense is strong too, with the senior Greg Romeus being named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy list. This is a great sign for the team, though it was definitely something the two players earned and deserved. The season opener is going to be played against the Utes on September 2nd, and is quickly becoming one of college football's most hotly anticipated.
Overall, the Pittsburgh Panthers football team is one of a rich and exciting history. They truly live up to the animal that they were named after, being strong, noble, and aggressive. They are definitely a team to keep an eye on in 2010, as they are expected to bring more than ever this year.
