Fighting Illini, or Illinois Fighting Illini, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, compete in NCAA division 1-A and the Big Ten Conference.  National championship years in football include years 1914, 1919, 1923, 1927, and 1951.  The team is coached by Ron Zook.  The term Illini is said to have been used as early as 1874 when the the school changed the name of their student paper to The Illini.  In reference to the athletics team in particular, Illini appears in a summary of the school's 1907 football season.  And Fighting Illini arrives in 1921 possibly the result of a fundraising campaign for the college football stadium and then just picked up and used from there forward.

September 4, 2010 the season opener at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis will house the college football game between Illinois and Missouri, the Fighting Illini's biggest rival.  For this reason, the game is known as the The Arch Rivalry (officially State Farm Arch Rivalry).  The Fighting Illini and the Tigers go head to head in a unique way since the teams are actually from different conferences.  And this game generates large amounts of interest from students and alumni in the St. Loius area as both schools have a significant amount of alumni that hail from this region. Perhaps the six straight seasons between 1975 and 1980 when they played each other helped to bring these two schools into rivarly mode.

The Fighting Illini football team has participated in 15 Bowl games since 1947, winning 6 of these games.  Currently Illini has 25 NFL players playing professional football today for various teams around the nation. And boasts 6 Pro Football Hall of Famers and 15 College Football Hall of Famers.

Coach Ron Zook has been said to have recruited some excellent players.  New in the defensive line up includes Corey Cooper, Jonathan Brown, Mark Wilson, Trulon Henry, and Arness Ikner.  In addition, the offensive team gained 4 new lineman.  And on the receiving end; Ryan Lankford.  This current form looks to put the Fighting Illini in the winning stances as the college football season nears.
