The Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, now days known as Virginia Tech, played its first football game in October of 1892 against the St. Albans Lutheran Boys School. They won their first game by the score of 14-10. This team wore gray and black, but those colors changed to orange and maroon in 1896. Also, their name would change to Virginia Tech later. They would be known, as they are now, as the Virginia Tech Hokies. They were called the Hokies for a reason. The reason was that a man named O.M. Stull wrote a cheer for the song in a competition, and that song had the word 'hoki' in it right at the beginning.
The Virginia Tech Hokies have been a part of several different conferences. They were an Independent from 1892-1897. The Hokies then joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1898, but they went back to being an Independent the very next year until finally in 1907 they joined the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association. It didn't stop there, though, as Virginia Tech then joined the Southern Conference in 1922, became an Independent again from 1965-1990, joined the big east in 1991, and they joined their current conference in 2004, which is the ACC.
The Virginia Tech Hookies don't have many rivals. Their biggest rivalry is against the University of Virginia. The reason for this rivalry is quite obvious as the two are both in the state of Virginia. They battle each year for the Commonwealth Cup and bragging rights. Whichever team wins gets the entire year to brag about it until the next year rolls around, and then it's game on once again. They have won the majority of the games between the University of Virginia. In fact, they have had a lot of success against a lot of teams with an overall winning percentage of over 60%.
The Virginia Tech Hokies still use the same cheer that was developed by O.M. Stull in the early 1900s. This song has been changed a little bit, though, as the phrase 'team, team, team!' was added to the end of the fight song. The Virginia Tech mascot has also underwent a change recently. Their mascot was traditionally the gobbler, but it was eliminated by a coach in the late 1970s. However, the famous football coach Frank Beamer brought the gobbler back in the late 1980s, and it is now known as the 'Hokibird'.
