The LSU Fighting Tigers are a force to be reckoned with in the SEC. This is a very tough conference filled with many rivals and highly ranked opponents. The LSU tigers are the proud owners of three national championship titles and 13 conference championships, ten of which they earned after joining the SEC. Les Miles is the current head coach and he led the team to its most recent national championship title in the 2007 season. The tigers have also played in an impressive 42 bowl games since 1907. In 2009 they beat Penn State in the Capital One Bowl.
The LSU football team started using the nickname the tigers in 1896, after they had a record of 6-0. The word fighting did not get added until 1955. The school took the name tiger from a volunteer company that started in New Orleans in the 1830s. This company went by the name of Tiger Rifles. Tigers grew into fighting tigers in 1955 with the help of the LSU 'fourth-quarter ball club'.
All great football teams have their rivals and LSU is no different. The Tulane Green Wave holds the title of being the oldest rival of LSU. They held their first game in 1893. Within the SEC, there are several teams that can be considered rivals of LSU. Ole Miss Rebels, Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, and the Florida Gators are the most noted rivals within the division. The yearly game between Florida and LSU is a major event because both teams are normally ranked very high within the BCS.
Tailgating, the march down the hill, and special songs and cheers are wonderful traditions that are special just for LSU and their fans. Tailgating is one big party that normally starts in the early morning and last all night. The storied tradition of the march down the hill is definitely a tradition that really pumps up the players and the fans before the game. Some other noted traditions would be the first down cheer and the pregame show by the LSU band. This team is steeped in history and pride that the players and fans show at every game.
