The University of Coloradofootball team, known as the Colorado Buffaloes to beloved fans across the nation, led on the field by their mascot Ralphie, has a long, proud tradition on the gridiron dating back to 1890. They are currently tied with Norte Dame at the 24 spot in All-Time Bowl appearances with 24. Their first bowl game was the 1938 Cotton Bowl where they lost to Rice 28 - 14. Their last bowl appearance was the 2007 Independence Bowl where Alabama beat them 30 – 24. The Buffaloes Bowl record is 12 – 16.
The Colorado Buffaloes have one of most unique traditions and mascots in college athletics. Ralphie, a real live massive buffalo, at the beginning of each game and second half, leads the football team onto the field. The mascot was chosen 1934 after the school’s newspaper “Silver and Gold” ran a contest to adopt a nickname. The Buffaloes was chosen and live buffaloes began appearing at home games. It was 1966 when the first “Ralphie” appeared. The tradition of Ralphie leading the team on the field occurred October 28, 1967 against Oklahoma State. Since then there have been five Ralphies, each getting a numerical number after their name. The current mascot leading the team is Ralphie V.
The pinnacle of Colorado Buffaloes football history came in 1990 when they won the National Championship. They posted an 11-1-1and capped it with a win over Norte Dame in the Orange Bowl 10 - 9, in front of over 77,000 people. This was sweet revenge because the previous year they lost to Norte Dame 21-6, in the Orange Bowl after going in with a Number One ranking and 11 – 0 record in regular season.
The Buffaloes have won 26 Conference Titles. They currently play in the Big 12 through 2011. They jump into the Pacific-Ten Conference in 2012. Their coach, Dan Hawkins, is entering into his fifth year. The team has fallen on rough times and has not had a winning year since 2005 with a 7-6 record. Rashaan Salaam, running back, has been the only play to win the Heisman Trophy from the University of Colorado. He won in 1994 after rushing 2055 yards for the season.
