The Louisville cardinals has been the college football team for the University of Louisville since 1912. They adopted the Cardinal, which is also the state bird, as their mascot in 1913. Their school colors are black and red, though the cardinal emblem on their helmet is black, red and yellow. The fight song of the team is "Fight! U of L".  A member of the Big East Conference, the Cards play their home games at Papa John Cardinal’s Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.

Though they haven’t reached a Bowl game in the last three years, the Cardinals once boasted nine consecutive Bowl appearances, winning 41 games over the last four years. The Cards all time record is 431–411–17 (.512). The year 2006 was especially impressive, with an Orange Bowl victory and Big East Championship. In fact, Louisville was in a Bowl game every year from 1998 through 2006. Their overall Bowl game record stands at 6-7-1.  Their roster of impeccable alumni is too long to cite. These guys also had 11 consecutive wins during the 2004-2005 timeframe. Other amazing records include 89 games played without being shutout. The historically memorable games include those played with rivals Southern Mississippi (1989, 1999), Florida State (2002), and West Virginia (2005-2006).  The Cards last great performance occurred in the 2007 Orange Bowl against another rival, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The team won 24-13, with legendary coach Bobby Petrino (2003-2006) at the helm.

Louisville fans are looking forward to the 2010-2011 season. Led by coach Charlie Strong, the Cards will start this season against Kentucky on September 4th. Louisville is 9-13 in their series with Kentucky, but did win 16 games against them, including the last three. The Cards are expected to come back strong and redeem themselves, after last year’s dismal season. With the expansion of Papa John Cardinal’s Stadium, many additional fans will be there to encourage them. The expansion will allow 55,000 fans to enjoy the football fun and chat the Louisville fight song, “Fight now for victory and show them, how we sure will win this game, fight on you Card'nals and prove to them, that we deserve our fame. Rah, Rah, Rah!”
