Representing the University of Minnesota is the Minnesota Golden Gophers home of 23 varsity sporting teams. In 1857, the State of Minnesota was dubbed the "Gopher State" after a cartoon depicting nine politician’s heads with gopher bodies pulling a locomotive was published. The cartoon represented the railroad legislation taking place at the time. Years later the University chose the name to represent their school for sporting events and such. The "golden" part came later during the 1930's due to the color of the teams jerseys, which were completely gold with the maroon absent.
