The South Florida Bulls football team hail from Tampa, Florida. They are a part of Division 1 FBS, and are incredibly young compared to a many of the other schools. The team only began in 1997 under the leadership of Jim Leavitt. The current head coach is Skip Holz. It wasn't until 2005 that they finally became a member of the Big East. Since then, they have been responsible for plenty of upsets, including beating top 25 ranked teams like Louisville in 2005 and Auburn in 2007. Of course, few can forget their victory over the Florida State Seminoles in 2009. However, these are just some of the reasons why they have gained so much respect in such a short time.
The Bulls have also been victorious in Bowl games, such as their victory over the East Carolina Pirates in 2006 at the PapaJohns.com Bowl. Though they lost their first bowl appearance to the Wolfpack, that didn't stop them from regrouping and strategizing to win the next time. It isn't very difficult to see that they have a very good chance of returning and being victorious in 2010.
So while the Bulls have had a lot of success in starting from no where to becoming an actual contending opponent to a lot of teams, their lack of history has made it difficult to have a rival. However, if one is to be born and sustained it is expected to be with Louisville or Rutgers. Still one more option includes the Miami Hurricanes, who are already slated to play the Bulls for the next six years on Thanksgiving Day weekend.
The Bulls are truly a testament to what can be done by solid leadership, determination, and hard work. An interesting thing to note is that they have never lost a home opener. This just goes to show what kind of mentality they have and how strong the their fans' and fellow students' support for them is. They have advanced through the ranks of college football and continue to do so with every passing year, which is pretty amazing in itself. Overall, they're a highly effective team that thrives on being the underdog and they rarely disappoint their fans.
