The NC State Wolfpack is the name given to all the athletic teams at North Carolina State University. It was a name they earned in 1922 when one fan noticed that the student body supporting the different athletic events behaved like a wolf pack. Before that, they had several other names, such as the Red Terrors, the Aggies, or the Techs. Obviously, they have managed to live up the pack of wolves name they earned so long ago, and so it has stuck.
The football team at North Carolina State has been playing since 1892, though the first game against another college wasn't until the next year. The year after that was the beginning of what would become a rivalry between their neighbors at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ever since then, NC State has had a rich history of victory as well as defeat. They have been the conference champs for 11 years, though by far the most notable was the streak they had from 1963 to 1965. They were conference champs again in 1968. Although they only had two more conference championships after that, they have been fierce contenders in all along.
The Wolfpack football team has been to a total of 24 bowl games from 1947 until the last one they played at the end of 2008. In the past, the majority of their bowl games were the Liberty Bowl and Peach Bowl, but more recently they have played in bowls such as the Micron PC Bowl, Tangerine Bowl, Meineke Car Car Bowl, and the PapaJohns.com Bowl. Their last bowl appearnce ended in a loss to Rutgers unfortunatley, but that isn't the end of the Wolfpack. Russell Wilson, the starting quarterback, will end up going to the NFL. However, for now he intends to play on the pack and lead them to an ACC Championship.
It is hard to find a team that plays with such ferocity that actually deserves to be called a Wolfpack, but NC State football has earned it and continues to live up to it. They are always a formidable team to play, and the student body is proud to support them.
