Representing the University of Minnesota is the Minnesota Golden Gophers home of 23 varsity sporting teams.  In 1857, the State of Minnesota was dubbed the "Gopher State" after a cartoon depicting nine politician’s heads with gopher bodies pulling a locomotive was published. The cartoon represented the railroad legislation taking place at the time. Years later the University chose the name to represent their school for sporting events and such. The "golden" part came later during the 1930's due to the color of the teams jerseys, which were completely gold with the maroon absent.

The Golden Gophers, a part of the Big Ten Conference, have accomplished a few football bowl game victories. These victories are including, but not limited, to the Rose Bowl, Music City Bowl and the 1985 Independence Bowl.  Their men's basketball team has had several appearances in the NCAA tournament with the latest in 2010.  Men and women's ice hockey teams have had several appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, nineteen for the men and seven for the women. Their baseball program has given the University 3 National Championships with the last one in 1964, but 22 Big Ten Regular Season Championships.

For the traveling trophies, in 1903, Michigan coach Fielding Yost accidentally left The Little Brown Jug in Minnesota. It is now painted with the victories of two teams.  The Floyd of Rosedale Trophy, which happens to be a bronze pig, is a rival trophy between the Gophers and the Iowa Hawkeyes since 1935. Since 1948, Minnesota and the Wisconsin Badgers have tossed the Paul Bunyan’s Axe trophy back and forth. The trophy itself has record of the teams encounter’s since 1890.  Lastly, the Governer’s Bell, created to commemorate the 1993 acceptance of Penn State’s

Along with the major sporting activities, the University also has Cheerleaders and a Dance Team as part of their athletic department. They support and represent the events for basketball, football, hockey and volleyball. The fight song for the Golden Gophers is Minnesota Rouser along with Go Gopher Victory, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. The mascot is the Goldy Gopher and the school colors are maroon and gold.
