The Marshall Thundering Herd football team hails from Huntington, West Virginia. They are the football team of the intercollegiate varsity sports program of Marshall University. Their home games are played at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

This football team was originally known as the Indians with the team colors being black and blue. The Herald Dispatch sports editor, Carl “Duke” Ridgley, back in the early 1990s began referring to the Indians as the Thundering Herd. Eventually, as the team was also given other nicknames over time, a vote was a taken and they became officially named The Marshall Thundering Herd. The name is taken from a 1925 Zane Grey novel, “The Thundering Herd” about the great loss of the magnificent buffaloes. This is why Marco the Buffalo is the team’s mascot.

This football team with an interesting history has rejoiced in many victories as well as some sad losses. One interesting annual football game the team participates in is the Battle for the Bell. It is a regional game. They play this game with the Ohio University Bobcats. The winning team gets the traveling bell trophy. This yearly event is very exciting.

Don’t miss the Thundering Herd playing against the West Virginia Mountaineers. That game will be on September 10 at the Friends of Coal Bowl. After that they will play the Ohio University Bobcats in the Battle for the Bell on September 25.

The upcoming regular 2010 season will be the 114th consecutive year for this great team. The games start in September opening with the first game on September 2nd against Ohio State. Throughout the 2010 season they will be playing against West Virginia, Bowling Green, Ohio, Southern Mississippi, UCF, East Carolina, UTEP, UAB, Memphis, SMU and Tulane. The last game of the season will be on November 27th against Tulane. You can catch many of these exciting games on TV channels BTN, ESPN, CBSCS, and CSS.
