The Kansas State Wildcats football team officially began playing in 1896 and the first game in the team's record books is from November 28, 1896, a 14-0 loss to Fort Riley. As of the completion of the 2009 season, the all-time record for the team is 459-604-41. During the current second era of coach Bill Snyder's reign the team saw a 2009 season record of 6-6 with a record of 4-4 in Big 12 play and they missed the Big 12 North winning title by one game. Coach Snyder has led the team through a number of ups and downs since he first came to the team in 1989. The team garnered a #1 national ranking for the 1998 season and a championship in the Big 12 Conference in 2003. During Snyder's first reign as coach, the team attended 11 straight bowl games and was ranked within the Top 25 regularly. Snyder retired in 2005 and was brought back in 2008.

Early in the 20th century, the Kansas State first gained the nickname "Aggies" but in 1915, new coach John Bender, gave his team the nickname "Wildcats." Under Coach Clevenger in 1917, the school teams again were known as the "Aggies" until 1920 when Coach Bachman took over the football program and once again used the name "Wildcats" for the team. The nickname has stuck ever since then.

Kansas State has several well-known football rivalries, including the Sunflower Showdown of Kansas State versus Kansas. The two rivals compete annually for the Governor's Cup trophy and the Wildcats defeated the Jayhawks in 2009. Kansas State versus Nebraska is another heated rivalry for KSU and the two teams battled for the Big 12 North championship often through the late 1990s and early 2000s. Kansas State and Colorado also have an unofficial but notable rivalry where the games tend to get quite heated and the results often has a significant impact on KSU's season.

Throughout the ups and downs of the Wildcats performance year-to-year, the fans remain a decided bunch. Willie the Wildcat thrills the crowd at every game, home and away, with the traditional "K!-S!-U! Wildcats!" cheer raising the crowd's enthusiasm again and again.
