The Florida State Seminoles is a college football program that is rich in history.  Established in 1851 as Florida State University, and having it's first football program by 1900, the program known today as the FSU Seminoles were state champions as early as 1904.  After going through a period of being an all-women's school, after WWII the university again offered sessions to male students, and FSU football again was being played.  By 1950, the Seminoles were playing in a newly built stadium that could hold a crowd of fifteen thousand.  The stadium has expanded several times, and today holds over eighty thousand fans, which is the largest stadium in the Atlantic Coast Conference, or the ACC.

The Florida State Seminoles got their name from the Seminole Native American Tribe of Florida.  The tribe has a history of standing courageously against early American military forces and withstanding the harsh, naturally inclement Everglades in Florida.  Throughout it's history, Florida State has learned much of the Native Americans through the use of their name as a mascot.  The mascots were presented as having Mohawks and feathered war bonnets, however, these aspects of the Native American are stereotyped from Hollywood's version of the plains Indians.  In time, Florida State University would go through many different mascot uniforms, employing more traditional tools and influences of the Seminole tribe.

With the strong tradition of Florida State Seminoles football program comes a strong team that has a winning history.  Though the Seminoles only have two National Championships, they have many conference championships, and have played in almost forty bowl games.  The National Championships came under the helm of well known coach Bobby Bowden, who, of which, is the namesake of their stadium.  Their first National Championship came in 1993, and the next one came in 1999.  Their last conference championship came in 2005, and their last bowl game was in 2010.  The rivalries of the Florida State football program are some of the oldest rivalries in all of football.  In state rivals, the University of Florida Gators, have been matched up against the Seminoles over fifty times, and the Gators hold the crown for most wins in that series.  Another in state rival is the University of Miami Hurricanes.  The teams have played yearly since 1966, and Miami holds the lead of the series.  The rich history of the Florida State Seminoles make this one of more popular programs in all of college sports.  They have continued a tradition of producing quality football teams that are competitors each year.
