The University of Florida, located in Gainesville, Florida was founded in 1853 and established the football team 1906. Shortly thereafter, the team was named the Florida Gators and was trademarked colors of orange and blue were adopted. It is interesting to note that the colors were the combination of the orange and black of the East Florida Seminary and the white and blue of the Florida Agriculture College. Theses institutions were the predecessors to the current University of Florida. The Florida Gators, since their inception, has won three national championships and eight Southeastern Conference championships.

The Florida Gators are the only team in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history to have won the most games. Between 1912 and 2009, the Gators have played in 37 bowl games and won 18 of them. While the Gators did win the 1912 bowl game, the University Athletic Association does not recognize it. This history of the Gators must also include the one of their legendary coaches. Steven Spurrier, who coached from 1990 to 2001, led the team to 6 Southeastern Conference championships and in 1996 a national championship. He was named SEC Coach of the Year five times and was the only coach in college football history to win 120 games in twelve seasons. Urban Meyer became head coach in 2005 and has since lead the Florida Gators to two national championships in 2006 and 2008.

The Florida Gators has several rivals in their division but the most heated is one that is in state. The Florida State Seminoles and the University of Florida Gators has a rivalry that has gone on for many years. Initially the Florida Gators did not play the Seminoles and bill that was proposed forcing the two the play in 1955 was voted down. Eventually the University of Florida gave in and in 1958 the first game between to two were played. Since that time there has been animosity between to two that is regularly settled on the football field.

An interesting fact about the Florida Gators is that they were actually the inspiration for the sports drink Gatorade. In 1965, researchers at the University of Florida were studying an electrolyte sports drink that would help athletes during their games. In 1967, the Gators used the drink during a championship game and ultimately won.
