The Florida AM Rattlers is the name of the sports teams that represents the Florida A&M university, otherwise known as FAMU. This is the only publicly funded historical university or college located in the state of Florida. It was named the number one college in the United States for African Americans. The university is located in Tallahassee, FL and have sports such as men's sports in baseball, basketball, football, golf, swimming, tennis and track and field. They also offers sports for women in tennis, basketball, bowling, softball, swimming, volleyball and track and field. It is uncertain has to how they got the name "Rattlers."
Between 1938 to 1961 the football team won the "Black college championship" eight times. Six of these winnings were while they were coached by the head coach, Jake Gaither. The six times when they won with him where in 1950, 1952, 1954, 1957, 1959 and 1961. Gaither's teams consisted of 36 All-Americans, and 42 who moved on to play in the National Football League. Jake Gaither was retired in 1969 after coaching for 25 years.
The Rattlers won the first NCAA D1-AA national championship in the year 1978. This was after they defeated the university of Massachusetts. One of the most memorable time in history was when their football team defeated the university of Miami in the year 1979. Also, they received national attention on November 15, 2008 when ESPN's "College Gameday" was broadcasted live from the campus.
Joe Taylor took over as the football head coach in the year of 2007, shortly after the team lost six of their seven games 3-8. Prior to that, he spent sixteen seasons at Hampton University. While he was there, he compiled a 136-49-1 record. He was also named MEAC coach of the year for three seasons. The football team now ranks in the top 25, in the NCAA football championship subdivision pole. Jerome James is one of the players for the basketball team. He was selected by the "Sacramento Kings" in the 1998 NBA draft of the second round. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in 358 career games.
