As we know, football is one of the most popular and famous sports in America. All across America, state teams, college teams and high school teams compete to be the best of the best every year. Learning the history of a team is what makes a team proud and heart filled. That is what football is all about. Finding out what drives them to win each season and feeling the love all the fans provided. The same is true for the Boston college Eagles. They have been around for a long time and have provided there fans with the loyalty only football can provide.
The team began at the request of two undergraduates. The Boston College President appointed Joseph Drum as the first head coach and Joseph F. O'Connell as the captain. Both of these positions was unpaid, however that did not matter. The first official game was played against the St. John's Literary Institute of Cambridge, on October 26, 1893. In 1896 the most talked about rivalries began in college football. This was between Boston College and Holy Cross. During the early 20th century, these games brought in some of the largest sports crowds.
The Boston College Eagles have achieved a tramendous sucess over the years. The nickname they have as the Eagles dates back to the 1920's. This was chosen because of the symbolic nature it has meaning majesty, freedom and power. It ranks high above the others and the name the "Eagles" eventually stayed. They sure to be seen with their maroon and gold uniforms. They have different rivalries than they did back with they first started. Some of the greatest games to see now are with Notre Dame, also known as the "Holy War", Virginia Tech Hookies, Miami Hurricanes, Clemson Tigers and Florida State Seminoles. In 2007 Boston College marked it's first 7-0 victory record since 1942.
This team has a long history and a lot to be proud of. They have brought together heart and dedication to this team, and in turn they give us a great college football team. There is nothing better than seeing them play like the pros!
